The International Cesarean Awareness Network is powered by the selfless efforts of our numerous volunteers. We cannot thank our dedicated volunteers enough for their cooperation and service in assisting ICAN with accomplishing its mission. In an effort to acknowledge some of our amazing volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to offer support, education, and advocacy for the mothers in their area, the International Cesarean Awareness Network is pleased to announce Suzanne Chesney as the December 2016 Volunteer of the Month.
Suzanne is a dedicated volunteer out of ICAN of Manhattan who’s been with ICAN for two years. She is a hardworking member of ICAN leadership and does this while working full time. We appreciate the work she does!
How did you first find ICAN?
I first became involved with the ICAN Facebook group. It was a huge source of inspiration and information for me as I prepared for my VBAC. I contacted the Manhattan chapter during that time, and after the birth of my daughter Narcisa Jovic asked me to join her in leadership.
What motivates you as a volunteer?
After the birth of my first child, I felt incredibly isolated in the deep disappointment I had surrounding my birth experience. I felt betrayed by my body and our system of maternity care. I wished that I had someone to talk to who had been through a similar journey. As a volunteer, I hope to be that empathetic listener for other women.
Do you have a profession or any other passions outside of ICAN?
In addition to being a mother of 2, I am a costume designer working in regional and off-Broadway theatres.
What was your proudest moment as an ICAN volunteer? What about your hardest?
My proudest moment as an ICAN volunteer was also my hardest emotionally. With the help of many other ICAN leaders, I was able to provide a broad range of evidence based information to a woman struggling with some incredibly difficult choices regarding a pregnancy after multiple cesareans. Although we never met in person I think of her often, and I am constantly inspired by the depth, intelligence, and sensitivity she showed. I was immensely proud to support this brave woman and so many others like her.
