Please introduce yourself to ICAN:
I am a mother of six, five of which I gave birth to, one was born from another womb. In August of 2016, I had an all natural VBA4C and it was simply AMAZING and empowering! I am married to the most amazing and supportive man a woman could ask for and he is amazing with our children. I am a birth worker as a labor and postpartum doula. Giving back to the community is a passion of mine, and I thrive on it.
What led you to join ICAN?
I first heard about ICAN at a local hospital when I was pregnant with my second child back in 2003. The mission is what drew me in. As a mother who had a cesarean, it put my mind at ease knowing that there was an origination out there who understood my feelings, and who wanted to bring education about VBAC. When I had my first child, my mother had told me that there was a “Once a cesarean, always a cesarean” rule. I was over the moon to find out that this was not the case.
How do you share ICAN as an organization with others?
I would like to see more Drs. in our area offer VBAMCs. Most Drs. will only allow a TOLAC if a mother has had only one previous cesarean. I don’t believe that this is fair to mothers, especially if the mother is a good candidate for a TOLAC. I am most excited to educate mothers about their choices and to preach the ICAN mission statement.
Where will you be serving women through ICAN?
Our chapter is located in the Coachella Valley, CA. We are located in Southern California, just over 100 miles southeast of Los Angeles. We are located in Riverside County and serve the high and low desert areas including Palm Springs, CA.
