ICAN is excited to announce our newest Chapter Leader!

“Your body is your own and you are entitled to what happens to and with it. Women are too often treated as if they have less rights for their body while it is carrying life. Every woman has the right to informed, consensual care during their pregnancy.” – Melissa Wood, ICAN of Grand Rapids

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I was born and raised in Oklahoma and moved to Michigan in 2011 to attend a local ministry school for women’s advocacy studies. I met my husband and we married in 2014 and have two amazing children – Daisy, 3 and Waylon, 1.

How did you find out about ICAN?

My midwife introduced me to ICAN when I was due with my second baby, when we were discussing the trauma from my first birth, a home birth transfer to cesarean. She told me about a group with women telling the same story I was and it was the first time I had felt heard since the birth of my daughter.

What are you most excited about being a Chapter Leader?

I am a nurturer by nature. The idea of bridging the gap between women with similar stories and wounds, and helping them find a place of healing and peace, that is the most exciting part. I want to see women rise up in their power.
What area does your chapter serve?

Grand Rapids, Michigan and the surrounding areas.

What is the best thing about the birth climate in your area?

There are lots of options for doulas and midwifery care, either in the hospital or out.

What is one thing you would change about the birth climate in your area?

I wish there was more education about patients rights in hospitals.

Where can we find out more info about your chapter?

Check out our Facebook page here.

Congratulations, Melissa!
