An article published yesterday revealed the findings of data collected from over 200 pregnancies which were diagnosed with fetal macrosomia based on ultrasound. These results were reported at the annual meeting of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. According to the article, the data revealed that only about 1/3 of those diagnosed as macrosomic were actually macrosomic at birth. And women whose fetuses carried this ultrasound-diagnosed macrosomia label were more than twice as likely to deliver their babies by cesarean as compared to all pregnancies in the general population. Quoting from the article, “The mode of delivery was cesarean section in 66% of the pregnancies, compared with just 29% of all pregnancies in Calgary during the same period.”
