Reuters reported online yesterday the findings of a recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore. Led by Dr. Erika F. Werner, an obstetrician at the medical school, the study found from a sample size of 400,000 first time mothers “. . . that newborns delivered by forceps were 45 percent less likely to suffer a seizure than those born via vacuum pump or C-section.” The study also found, however, that babies born by cesarean were less likely to experience the complication of subdural hemorrhage. The overall rates of either of these complications is very low, but Dr. Werner expressed concern about the long term ramifications seizures would have on the baby’s brain development compared to subdural bleeding.
