Celebrating 30 Years of ICAN: 30 Crafts–Labor Jewelry

During labor it can be very meaningful for women to wear a piece of jewelery with special significance to them.  This could be a beaded bracelet made at a blessingway, a family heirloom, or a gift from their partner.  Whether purchased or handmade, this tangible reminder of love and support can be incredibly encouraging through pregnancy and birth!

Our sixth pregnancy came with some complications and bedrest, which caused a lot of anxiety.  We were hoping for our third VBAC, and I was trying so hard to be positive and not let my fears take over.  My very sweet husband had this necklace made to remind me of one of my mantras – All is well.  I wore it through our birth and this photo was taken as our healthy, beautiful baby girl nursed for the first time and gazed up at me.

  1. A beautiful picture capturing that memory.
My sister bought me a similiar necklace during my 2nd pregnancy. In all the research & exercises to prepare my mind & body toward the option of TRial
Of labor (TOL) after cesarean, i often needed the reminder to gestate in peace (GIP). Mine reads: Maluhla. I believe it means peace.

I wear the necklace often to remind me of my peaceful moments during my VBAC. I make sure to wear it in situations that might cause anxiety (family parties lol!).

  2. Such a beautiful photo! It really couldn’t be more perfect for this beautiful story! Thank you for sharing!

  3. Thank you! I’m so glad our photographer was able to capture that moment. I’m a doula now and it’s my favorite necklace to wear to births. 🙂

  4. Love the photo. It is so moving as the baby holds mum’s finger…
I worn my necklace when I was in hospital with my little one.

    Thanks
