The International Cesarean Awareness Network is powered by the selfless efforts of our numerous volunteers. We cannot thank our dedicated volunteers enough for their cooperation and service in assisting ICAN with accomplishing its mission.
In an effort to acknowledge some of our amazing volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to offer support, education, and advocacy for the mothers in their area, the International Cesarean Awareness Network is pleased to announce Ann Marie Walsh as the October 2015 Volunteer of the Month.
Ann Marie Walsh, this month’s honoree, is the Southeast Regional Coordinator, a member of the 2016 ICAN Conference Committee, and co-leader for ICAN of Nashville.
Get to know our October 2015 Volunteer of the Month:
How long have you been an ICAN member?
I initially joined as an individual five years ago before the 2011 National Conference in St. Louis. I think I let my membership lapse after that, but joined again as a professional member in 2012.
How did you first find ICAN?
I was referred to ICAN from my cousin after the birth of my first by cesarean when I was researching a VBAC in 2009. I used it for all the information and suggestions I could find, then started going to meetings in 2011.
What motivates you as a volunteer?
I appreciated all of the support and information I received through my births. I wanted to continue to share what I’ve learned with mothers just beginning their journey. I appreciated hearing the stories and realizing I wasn’t alone in my experiences. It felt good to have that person say ‘Me too!’ I enjoy offering that to others.
Do you have a profession or any other passions outside of ICAN?
I’m a full-time System Administrator for a national company and mom of three. Between baseball, gymnastics and other events for the kids, I don’t have much free time, but I love to read and cross-stitch. I periodically teach a VBAC class, though not since the birth of my third child this year.
What was your proudest moment as an ICAN volunteer? What about your hardest?
My proudest is this moment being selected as the Volunteer of the Month! I’ve loved growing as part of ICAN over the past couple of years. First as a Chapter Co-Leader and joining the planning team of the 2016 Conference. My hardest has been transitioning into the Southeast Regional Coordinator. It’s been tough getting my hands around the role, though it’s already becoming rewarding. Getting to interview applicants and seeing their passion for the birth process. It helps you remember why you got involved in the first place.
