The International Cesarean Awareness Network is powered by the selfless efforts of our numerous volunteers. We cannot thank our dedicated volunteers enough for their cooperation and service in assisting ICAN with accomplishing its mission.

In an effort to acknowledge some of our amazing volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to offer support, education, and advocacy for the mothers in their area, the International Cesarean Awareness Network is pleased to announce Justen Alexander as the September 2016 Volunteer of the Month.

Justen Alexander, this month’s honoree, is an integral part of ICAN of Huntsville’s team. Her passion in advocating for women’s rights in childbirth is well known and ongoing. She recently has gone to great lengths to facilitate and organize a special meeting for the women in her community to receive support for birth trauma. She also went above and beyond to be last minute interviewed by a local news station on why improvement in our birth climate is needed, the lack of access to VBAC care, and how those things have affected her personally. Justen is a hard worker, and the ICAN of Huntsville team would not be able to do all they do without her. Thank you, Justen!

I found my local ICAN chapter through a Facebook parenting group. My life changed that day! Suddenly a new world opened and I discovered the doctor that would assist in the delivery of my VBA2C baby. The support I gained from the women in the chapter is invaluable. I get motivated when I see the way women are treated in our community. I want to help them realize they have rights, options, and that they should be treated respectfully in pregnancy and childbirth.

What was your proudest moment as an ICAN volunteer? What about your hardest?

My proudest moment was when our chapter hosted the Improving Birth Rally for our area, and a group of 30 women came together to show the community that Birth Rights are Human Rights! We had two local news stations cover the Rally, and both used quotes from ACOG (that we provided to them) on the broadcast. I was so proud of all of us in that moment. Seeing VBAC, and access to care awareness on our local news was an amazing moment! Alabama has a severe access to care issue. Seeing women stuck in situations with no way out, are the hardest moments.

Do you have a profession or any other passions outside of ICAN?

I also volunteer with The Good Earth, LLC as a Home Funeral educator. We are a group of volunteers that help train families on the process and benefits of caring for your deceased loved one at home.

We appreciate you so much, Justen! Thank you for all that you do to support birthing women!
