Please introduce yourself to ICAN:
I used to be a lawyer, but my own VBAC brought me to birth work. I’ve been to hundreds of births and am excited to become a CPM by the end of 2017. I love yoga, swimming, and biking with my husband and three kids. I had a cesarean in 2009, a hospital water birth in 2011, and an unmedicated home birth transport in 2015.
What led you to join ICAN?
I went to my first ICAN meeting 7 years ago when I was planning my first VBAC. I had avoided meetings because I’d been avoiding the dark, scary feelings that my CS brought up. I knew that I’d have to face those feelings to have the VBAC I’d imagined, so I went to ICAN with a friend.
This is my second time being a leader in our ICAN chapter. I’m excited to get involved again. I love watching moms move forward from their first meeting to the meeting where they tell their VBAC story.
How do you share ICAN as an organization with others?
We are a safe space to come with all feelings. We never think you love your baby less because you grieve the way he was born-just the opposite!
Where will you be serving women through ICAN?
Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. I would like to see less disparity between outcomes at area hospitals. We have one practice where you have a 95% chance of having a VBAC and another hospital with the fifth highest CS rate in the country for low-risk women.
