Throughout the month of November, ICAN will be sharing social media graphics and blog posts about #GivingTuesday. If you didn’t participate last year, and even if you did, you may wonder what this event is all about. Today is your introduction to the movement!
For several years, the United States holiday of Thanksgiving has been surrounded by special shopping days to fuel the start of the holiday gift-giving season. There is Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and since 2012, #GivingTuesday. Rather than focusing on consumerism, it is a movement to draw attention to non-profit organizations by celebrating and supporting giving and philanthropy for a charitable holiday season.
Using social media and collaboration, #GivingTuesday focuses on bringing generous people together to enact real change in their communities by providing a platform encouraging the donation of time, resources, talents, and of course, finances. Through small acts of kindness, this global movement sparks a passion for sharing our capacity to care for and empower each other.
You can participate in many ways throughout November with ICAN. There will be social media graphics to share, blog posts to read, and of course, donation selfies on the day – November 28, 2017. You can check with your local ICAN chapter about any special events this month to celebrate coming together to grow ICAN locally and nationally. ICAN is also accepting donations of handmade or bought goods to be giving away in a drawing in December to thank our supporters for donating during the #GivingTuesday event.
