“I am really excited about being able to educate and empower others and to collaborate with professionals to see how we can help even more.” ~ PJ Barnett, ICAN of North Houston

Please introduce yourself to ICAN:

I am a licensed funeral director, soon to be making the switch to postpartum doula. I am an office manager at Rebel Birth Education and Resource Haven and also work a few hours for my wonderful midwife at Cy-Fair Birth Center. I’ve been married for 5 years this coming February and my husband is the coolest, nerdiest, birth junkiest guy I know. He is a stay at home dad to our three kids and is amazing at it! I love planning and journaling and have a passion for educating.

My first son was born via unplanned cesarean, my second son was my first VBAC born at Cy-Fair Birth Center and my daughter, our third was a planned homebirth, but had her own plans and was born at 35 weeks after a necessary induction full of interventions but still unmedicated VBAC.

What led you to join ICAN?

I found out about ICAN through a red tent event a few years ago.

How do you share ICAN as an organization with others?

I wish that people knew ICAN isn’t JUST about having a VBAC – it is so much more than that. Having a baby come out of your vagina isn’t what is the MOST important. What is important is that you were educated on your decisions and able to be empowered about advocating for yourself. If you have all the tools under your belt and know all the possibilities that are out there for you, you don’t have to be afraid!

Where will you be serving families through ICAN?

We cover the North part of Houston, spanning Spring, The Woodlands, Tomball, and some of Humble/Kingwood for now. We have several people who are actually supportive of choice and are willing to help those wanting more support and information to make the best decision for them.

Please share your upcoming Chapter meeting:

January 11, 7 pm, at Rebel Birth Education and Resource Haven. It is an open discussion on what folks feel is the biggest need in the area.

Congratulations, PJ!
