Chapter Leader Spotlight: Rachel Bruns – ICAN of Central Iowa
Please share a bit about yourself.
The consistent thread in my life whether personal or professional is service. I work for America’s Service Commissions, supporting the network of state service commissions, which administer AmeriCorps and promote volunteering in their states. Outside of work I am an active member of Junior League of Des Moines. I am a graduate of Drake University with my Masters in Public Administration and undergraduate degrees in Law, Politics, and Society and Public Relations. I have been married to my husband Jordan for eight years and we have two kids, Hannah and Arthur, and two dogs Sadie and Aiden.
How did you find out about ICAN?
I found out about ICAN from my physical therapist. At that time I didn’t have any awareness about the challenges I would soon face finding a VBAC supportive provider with my next pregnancy. Once I joined the ICAN of Central Iowa Facebook group I quickly learned how difficult it can be to find a VBAC supportive provider. The Facebook group ended up being a great resource and I want to make sure that resource continues in our community.
What part of being an ICAN Chapter Leader are you most excited about and why?
I’m looking forward to bringing together moms and their partners to provide support and education on maternal health and evidence based birth practices.
What would you say are some of your strongest beliefs about cesarean/VBAC awareness?
I feel strongly about the need for evidence based practices and informed consent. Whether a mom is wanting to have a repeat cesarean or a VBAC, she should be provided with evidence based information and a safe environment that supports her decisions.
What area does your chapter serve?
We serve the Central Iowa area/Des Moines and surrounding metro.
