Chapter Leader Spotlight: Renee Yarrington, ICAN of Delaware

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I am a mother to one spunky, free-spirited birth junkie in training and wife to an amazingly supportive husband. I am a birth and postpartum doula and Certified Lactation Counselor. I also run the cloth diaper bank for Delmarva. My next venture completing my midwifery training.

How did you find out about ICAN?

I had a rather traumatic childbirth experience with my daughter which led to me becoming a doula when she was an infant. During my doula training, I knew I wanted to support birthing people navigate childbirth experiences especially when they had been through traumatic or less than ideal primary birth experiences. When seeking out more resources and education for myself, I came across ICAN whose mission resonated deeply with me and still does to this day.

What do you wish people knew about ICAN?

I wish people knew that ICAN isn’t just for birthing people who have already had cesarean sections! We support everyone- even pregnant people who want to learn more about how to avoid primary cesareans.

What would you say are some of your strongest beliefs about cesarean/VBAC awareness?

I believe in the power of your body to give birth and too often birthing people are coerced or manipulated during a very vulnerable situation into unnecessary cesareans. My goal is to raise awareness on how to avoid an unnecessary cesarean, options for delivery in future pregnancies, and when cesareans truly are necessary. I’d love to see Delaware truly supporting birthing people in their VBAC plans, doctors providing accurate VBAC information and higher success rates to reflect that support.

Where can we find out more about your chapter?

Here is our chapter’s Facebook page.

Thank you, Renee, for all you do!
